By LINDA YOUNG lyoung@lakecityreporter.com FORT WHITE The first supermarket in Fort White should open for business in time for Thanksgiving 2006, but a drive-through conven- ience store proposed for the town will not be built because its location is too -close to a church to allow for beer sales, according to an existing town ordinance. The Fort White Town Council addressed the issues during its regular monthly meeting Monday night. Fort White Mayor Truett George told council members he received a letter proposing a drive-through convenience store for the "old B.P. station. now painted yellow." The location is the north- west corner of U.S. 27 and S.R. 47 and currently houses Joanne's Tubes Rental. However, adjacent to that prop- erty and just around the corner on U.S. 47 is the First Baptist Church of Fort White. George said the town has an ordinance that prohibits the sale of beer or wine with- in 1,000 feet of a church or school and First Baptist is within that Parnell distance. "I think there will be threats of law- suits," George said. He told the council he felt the town was on solid ground not to consider the request because of the town ordi- nances. Another major itern on the agenda Monday night was the annexation of the Deese prop- erty so plans to build on part of the property can proceed. The annexation process should take about (30 days, Geo-ge said.
