Columbia City Elementary Lana Boone, the principal, recognized all of the students who made Honor Roll, had perfect attendance and reached their Accelerated Reader Goals for the fourth six weeks by calling each stu- dent up on the stage during lunch time. She rewarded each student with a pencil and a certificate from six local businesses. A drawing was also held with all the perfect attendance students' names for a $10 gift card. The win- ners were: Ayla Gonzalez, Brandon Bagget and Brendan Brownfield. The Scholastic Book Fair will be held from March 18- 24. Bingo for Books will be held from 7-8 p.m. March 22 in the cafeteria. Students will play Bingo and have a chance to win books. Parents will have special drawings for door prizes. The Book Fair will also' be open that nigh from 6:30-7 p.m. and from 8- 8:30 p.m. Eastside Elementary Congratulations to the sec- ond, third, fourth and fifth- grade students who partici- pated in the Native American Weaving Project. Laura Hunter-Null, art teacher. at Eastside Elementary, guided the students in completing. hand-woven baskets that depicted Native American basket weaving. These stu- dent artists' work will be fea- tured at the Lake City Mall during the weeks of March 7- 18. All the schools in Columbia County will be par- ticipating in the springtime show. , Kindergarten students in Anita Starke's class enjoyed a fun filled day of educational activities planned around Dr. Seuss' birthday. Students made hats, door decorations, read books by Dr. Seuss and invited guest readers to also participate in the day's activi-, ties. They ended the day by enjoying a delicious cake dec- orated in his honor. Five Points Elementary Dawn Lindboe's multiage class used a bag of donated pencils for an impromptu math activity. Students first made estimates of how many pencils were in the bag. Next, students grouped them by tens and recorded data with tally marks. Then, the class counted by tens to get a total number. Thanks to Mr. Richardson, a parent, for donating the pencils. First-grader Antony Hall, from Mrs. Blanchard's class has earned 45 A.R.. points. Way to go, Antony. Melrose Park Elementary Kindergarten students at MPE are reading Keep Books. The students in Ms. Moseley and Ms. Patterson's kindergarten classes are cre- ating Home Libraries with their Keep Books. The books are part of a series of begin- ning readers, which the chil- dren enjoy within the class- room. Each child gets their own copy of the book to color and customize. They gain reading skills and strategies with the text and then take their book home to read to with parents and loved ones. The best part is that they don't have to bring the book back it is their to keep. The book fits neatly in any shoebox. Each child asks mom or grandma for a shoebox, which can be decorated and labeled. The Keep Book Library js a spe-' cial addition to our Home- School connection. The school wants to thank the students 'for doingI 'thei- best on FCAT. The school spirit and determination to do the best was felt by all these past two weeks as everyone- worked their way through the series of tests. Without the parents support and dedica- tion of the teachers and staff members the task could not have been complete. The school is very proud of the students accomplishments. A special thanks to the PTO for pampering everyone with low sugar snacks for the students during FCAT. Congrats. The band recently had the opportunity to perform 'at the Florida Bandmasters Association Performance Assessment at Eastside High in Gainesville. band students. performed three selections for a panel of judges and sight read two selections that they had never seen before. Earning an over- all score of "Excellent," the young people represented their school and their commu- nity in high style.
