Again, congratula- tions and thank you for your superb award-winning per- formance!" said Scorby. Commander, Navy Region Southeast Rear Adm. Tim Alexander also extended his appre- ciation to regional commands for their submissions. "Each year, we have an opportu- nity to recognize the excellence of shore installations that step beyond the day- to-day challenges and excel in provid- ing the best service to the fleet, fighter and family. The qual- ity of submissions from the installa- tions, as well as the tremendous efforts of our people in support of our nation, our Navy, and our instal- lations, is inspiring. Your accomplish- ments, given limited resources, exempli- fies a 'can do' spirit that I have found so prevalent dur- ing my visits around the region," said Alexander. "It gives me great pleasure to congratu- late NAS Jacksonville FAST FACTS In 1985, President Ronald Reagan established the Commander in Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence (CINC Award). Accordingly, the Department of Defense initiat- ed service-wide competition on behalf of the President. The President challenged the men and women of the Department of Defense to search for installations where person- nel do the best job with their resources to support the mission, and to seek out the most imagina- tive solutions to the many com- plex problems they face. To quote the President, "I am confident that this search for excellence and innovations will yield many new and better ways of accomplishing our mis- sion and, at the same time, honor those whose dedication has pro- duced the best defense organiza- tion in the world." In meeting the President's chal- lenge, the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and DLA con- duct their own intra-service com- petitions. Valuable benefits from this program include recognition for excellence, creative manage- ment, problem-solving ideas and innovation leadership. as the 2010 Commander in Chief's Installation Excellence Award Third Place Winner. Congratulations to Capt. Jack Scorby and his folks. I look forward to more great achievements in the future." From Page 1 and cultural resources," said Alexander. "The Navy will continue its evolution toward a green fleet and its commitment to a high stan- dard of stewardship. I urge all personnel to conserve energy, protect the environ- ment and participate in your local Earth Day events." NAS Jacksonville, NAS Pensacola, NAS New Orleans and Naval Seabee Base Gulfport already have activities planned to foster environmental stewardship on their bases April 22. NAS Jax Commanding Officer Capt. Jack Scorby Jr. said, "One of my prime responsibilities is ensuring we're good stewards of the environment. We appreciate each volunteer who takes part in this annual event. We value their concern for the environment not just today, but every day." NAS Jacksonville holds an annual shoreline cleanup along the St. Johns River, designated an 'American Heritage River' by the U.S. Environmental Protection A'-.-rln.-v. The American Heritage Rivers initiative has three objectives: natural resource and environmental protec- tion, economic revitalization, and historic and cultural preservation. Coinciding with the Navy's File photo SK2 Scott Davis, of Fleet and Industrial Supply Center on board NAS Jacksonville, adds an abandoned lawn chair to the debris collected during the 2009 shoreline cleanup along the St. Johns River, an American Heritage River. Earth Day 2010 theme of 'Partnering for a Greener Future,' Navy Region Southeast is a member of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance, the South Atlantic Alliance, the Southeast Partnership of Planning and Sustainability, as well as many other local and regional partnerships. According to Southeast Region Environmental Program Manager Camille Destafney, partnerships provide the opportunity to learn partners' values and missions, and to educate them on the Navy's mission, resulting in greater under- standing and opportunities to further all missions while protecting the environment. "Over the past 40 years, the Navy has made huge strides in environmental stewardship and protection of our natural resources," said Destafney. "Forty years ago, no one understood hazardous sub- stances and the impact they have on health; today we understand that and have laws in place to regu- late them. The Navy has embraced and become a leader in the environmental movement." SCHOOL TOUR: Officials find CO briefing eye-opening From Page 1 the changes." He added, "Collectively, the Navy is the largest employer in Duval County - and our public school sys- tem is the second-largest. A significant number of our students' parents are active-duty or civilians who work for the Navy, so I think that cooperation and communication among our communities is very impor- tant because we all serve the same families." Dr. Phyllis Ingram of St. Johns County School District asked Scorby if the Navy was finding enough qualified high school gradu- ates. "I was somewhat sur- prised when he said that obesity and lack of physical fitness make four out of 10 prospective enlistees ineli- gible to join. He added that with the current economy, the Navy can afford to be more selective about the men and women it recruits." Ellen Rubens, principal of Venetia Elementary School - the closest public school to NAS Jacksonville said, "About 25 percent of our school population is Navy dependents, so it's very important for me to learn more about base activities and family support services that are available at NAS Jacksonville. Capt. Scorby's briefing was very eye open- ing I had no idea there were so many different units on this base." Rubens added, "Dawn Mills, the NAS Jacksonville school liaison officer who planned our tour, is a valu- able community resource. I'm also grateful for the many Sailors and family members who volunteer at our school. Most recently, Navy volunteers cooked a delicious breakfast for our kids prior to taking the FCAT assessment test." After the commanding officer's briefing, the visi- tors toured Fleet Readiness Center Southeast. They also stopped by Hangar 1000 to tour a P-3C Orion maritime patrol air- craft assigned to the 'Red Lancers' of VP-10 and speak with Sailors about their naval careers. NAS Jacksonville Command Master Chief Jeff Hudson and other Sailors then hosted the group for lunch at the Flight Line Caf6.
