Hendricks said, "I've always been interested in military history, as well as the heritage of Navy hospital corpsmen. When I learned that hospital corpsman and Medal of Honor recipi- ent Robert Ingram lived in Jacksonville, I contacted him to ask if he would adminis- ter my oath of enlistment. He graciously agreed." He added, "It was an honor and a privilege to meet this real American hero who valiantly answered the call, corpsman up!'" Hendricks is under orders to the guided missile cruis- er USS Gettysburg (CG 64) based at NS Mayport. Hendricks urged those in attendance to read Ingram's award citation and thank him for his service. In fact, due to lost paperwork, more than 30 years passed until the Medal of Honor was awarded to Ingram by President Clinton at the HMC(SW/EXW) David Hendricks stands with his wife, Karen, son, Cody, and Medal administered the oath of enlistment for three more years to Hendricks. White House in Washington D.C. on July 10, 1998. The citation reads: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as corpsman with Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines against elements of a North Vietnam A'a,_i.--nl' (NVA) battalion in Quang Ngai Province Republic of Vietnam on 28 March 1966. Petty Officer Third Class Ingram accompanied the point platoon as it :Iari-.-- sively dispatched an outpost of an NVA battalion. The momentum of the attack rolled off a ridgeline down a tree-covered slope to a small paddy and a village beyond. Suddenly, the village tree line exploded with an intense hail of automatic rifle fire from approximately Photo by HM 1 Rebecca Caddis of Honor recipient Robert Ingram who 100 North Vietnamese regu- lars. In mere moments, the platoon ranks were deci- mated. Oblivious to the dan- ger, Petty Officer Ingram crawled across the bullet- spattered terrain to reach a downed Marine. As he administered aid, a bullet went through the palm of his hand. Calls for "corpsman!" echoed across the ridge. Bleeding, he edged across the fire-swept land- scape, collecting ammunition from the dead and adminis- tering aid to the wounded. Receiving two more wounds before realizing the third wound was life-threat- ening, he looked for a way off the face of the ridge, but again he heard the call for corpsman and again, he res- olutely answered. Though severely wound- ed three times, he rendered aid to those incapable until he finally reached the right flank of the platoon. While dressing the head wound of another corpsman, he sustained his fourth bullet wound. From 1600 hours until just prior to sunset, Petty Officer Ingram pushed, pulled, cajoled and doctored his Marines. Enduring the pain from his many wounds and dis- regarding the probability of his demise, Petty Officer Ingram's intrepid actions saved many lives that day. By his indomitable fight- ing spirit, daring initiative and unfaltering dedications to duty, Petty Officer Ingram reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the high- est traditions of the United States Naval Service. HS-7: Back from eventful deployment aboard USS Harry S Truman FOR YOUR INFORMATION From Page 3 to Jacksonville for urgently needed medi- cal care. Additionally, HS-7 took part in multiple exercises to practice the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission, successfully oper- ating with other ships and aircraft in the strike group to ensure the carrier strike group' ability to maneuver at sea. The Dusty Dogs also enjoyed the unique privilege of working with the Norwegian Navy during TSTA. The Norwegian frigate HNoMS Roald Amundsen (F 311) crossed the Atlantic to conduct operations with Carrier Strike Group 10 and HS-7. Dusty Dog helicopters made several vis- its to the frigate and achieved the mile- stone of being the first U.S. Navy helicop- ter to land on the ship's deck. Cmdr. Jason Young, Lt. j.g. James Sullivan, AW2 Justin Dove and AW3 Benjamin Hill. The flights to the ship fostered a strong working relationship between the two naval forces. The bond could be mea- sured by the large number of patches and gifts exchanged between HS-7 crews and Amundsen personnel. HS-7 proved they are able to operate con- sistently at a high level of excellence. This would not have been possible without the dedication of the squadron's maintainers and admin crew. Flight operations on a carrier are not possible without fully mission capable heli- copters, and the Dusty Dogs maintenance department always made sure that mission capable helicopters were ready and avail- able to support Carrier Strike Group 10.
