8 JAX AIR NEWS, NASJACKSONVILLE, Thursday, November 13, 2008 CHAPLAIN'S CORNER MARRIAGE/PERSONAL GROWTH Observing All Saints Day By Chaplain (It.) Thomas Bingol Our recent All Saints Sunday was a time of special reflection. As we looked around our chapel, our base and our community -we saw a unique identity. We belong to the communion of all the saints, both those living around us and those who have gone before us. We say that we are "Simul justus et pec- cator" at the same time both saint and sinner. Some might ask, "What do you mean Chaplain, how can we be both at the same time." The answer comes from the under- standing that we do not reach perfection in this lifetime. On this past All Saints Sunday, we gath- ered in the NAS Jax All Saints Chapel to remember that the church is larger than what we see. We are a part of what Martin Luther called, "The Church Militant," the church on earth, of the people who still fight the good fight of faith. As we called out the names of our fallen shipmates who have passed away in the last year, we lit a candle for each: MM2 Michael Barberio of Transient Personnel Unit; AN Kevon Beccelles and AM1 Roderick Carnes, Jr. of VS-32; AMCS David Davis of VP-5; HM1 Brenda Edwards of Naval Hospital Jax; AWCS Todd Ethington and AW2 Todd Knutson of VP-16; AO1 Michael Rehkamp of VP- 30; AD1 Keith Rigney of HS-11; ATCS Jay Schmidt of FRCSE; and ASCS Sidney Smith, Jr. ofVP-45. After calling these names, the congrega- tion lit candles for others who were impor- tant to them. Whether they passed away recently or a long time ago, there is some- thing special about calling a name, tolling a bell, and lighting a candle. It brings the person back to the forefront of our memory. We are a collection of people from all corners of the globe and from many dif- fering traditions. On this celebration of All Saints Sunday, a moment of silence was offered for all our shipmates who are grieving. I want to close with words of com- fort from Revelation 7, which wonderfully encourages us. Verse 9: After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could 7V-w WNo JJL Photo by Linda White Chaplain Thomas Bingol and Acolyte Lana Steinbach light candles for NAS Jax Sailors who died in the past year. count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. Verse 10: They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the L.iml' Verse 13: Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" Verse 14: I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Verse 15: For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. Verse 16: They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat. Verse 17: For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
