2 JAX AIR NEWS, NAS JACKSONVILLE, Thursday, March 20, 2008 Looking back in time... I.ader ip itIth or ittheout pets Hey MonevMan! Last night, my husband and I had an appointment with an investment sales- man and he told us that we needed extra life insurance on our 4-year-old son. I know that we already have $10,000 in coverage for him and I don't know why we would need more. This representative told us that we would need it in case our son got sick and could not be insured. What do you think? Should we have extra insur- ance on our children? MoneyMan Sez: Probably not. In fact, financial advisor Dave Ramsey says absolutely not. According to a recent article he stated, "I think it is a total waste of money and a scam. You shouldn't buy it." He went on to note that life insurance is a lousy investment. The book, IA luncheon Personal Finance for Dummies, suggests that you buy term insurance during your working years and depend on the growth of your investments to cover your retirement years. Military members are offered a lot of term insur- ance for the service mem- ber, the spouse and all children at very low rates. For most of us this is all the insurance we will ever need. As a military family, you are afforded term insur- ance for your life insurance needs and a Thrift Savings Plan for your investments. Take advantage of them! These are two great options which will meet the needs of most military members. More questions?
