 4.r Lesson in SurvivalJax



 = Every day is a fight for survival at the NAS
 indoor heated pool in Bldg. 614 where mock plane

 crashes, parachute dives and helicopter rescues are all
 part of the Air Operations survival training program for

 area pilots and aircrewmen.
 During a normal two hour class, student crash
 victims are dumped into the indoor heated 'sea' in a
 simulated jet or 'dilbert dunker and are forced to free
 themselves from the cockpit. Other survival tests include 

 parachute drops, helo recoveries, boarding a life
 raft and basic swim strokes.

 Callahan, a retired chief aviation electrician who now

 V L supervises, the indoor survival program for Air mn.. ..

 Operations.According to Mr. Callahan, his instructors are put Parachute Drop I

 through the same tests for survival as student pilots and
 aircrewmen. They also undergo a six month training
 l III i I period to become senior life savers and water safety

 instructors.
 Because of the continuing need for instructors, Mr.

 .. Callahan_ invited military men who are advanced a
 a. swimmers to apply for a full time job at the pool by
 ... calling him at Ext. 3908 for a personal interview. Can-
 didates who are selected for the job will be guaranteed a
 division transfer.
