CHAPLAIN'S CORNER garbage in! Garbage out! By Chaplain (It.) Azariah Robinson NAS Jax Chapel I dropped my television in May and decided not to buy a new one for a while. This was sort of my season'of sacrifice. Next, I decided to discontinue my satellite dish service. I wanted to basically limit the amount of garbage from the mass media that I allow to come into my house. This was a daunting chal- lenge for me because if nothing else television keeps me com- pany on those scorching hot days during the summer. In fact, channel surfing is really relaxing at times. I will miss looking for my remote just to surf., I know I am not the only one that surfs channels just for the relaxation. However, when I dropped my television I had sort of an Chapl epiphany. That is, a large AzariahR amount of what is broadcasted on the tube is simply gobbledygook. : I know I am not the only one who has set down and turned channel after chan- nel only to come to the realization of why am I watching this garbage. I must con- fess, I knew that I could not give it up permanently because football season would start in September and I am an avid fan. However, I was motivated to wean myself off in part for a little while because of the overwhelming amount of negative information and news that is disseminated via the television. This decision has an impact when rela- tives and friends visit. In fact, my mother threatened to cut her visit short because she could not get her daily dose of televan- ,gelist. I have to let you know that I am not fond of TV ministers and short visits are usually better than long visits. Perhaps this was a good sacrifice at the right time. On the other hand, television is not the only source of negative news and informa- tion. Unfortunately, we are bombarded by' all different mass media outlets (Internet, print news, radio, cabs, and buses). They are just about everywhere. With all of that in mind, it is extremely important for each of us to manage what we expose ourselves to on a daily basis. It's crucial that we maintain some sort of balance. Perhaps denying oneself unlim- ited access to the television is more an exercise in moderation and self-control than outright sacrifice. In Proverbs the a R writer says, "A man without self-control is defenseless as a city with,broken-down walls." Unrestrained exposures to the negative diatribe can pollute your spirit and leave you with a pessimistic view of the world. Nevertheless, it is important for us to use these mass .media outlets to stay informed about, local and world events. However, there are times when the media seems like nothing more than one sensationalized tabloid story after another aimed at enter- tainment and titillating our flesh. This affects our attitude, mindset and overall well-being, In fact, an overindulgence of negativity can be downright toxic and enable us to feel powerless and out of control. In fact, on a daily basis we hear, see, and read about a world spiraling out in(Lt of control. Families are out of obinson control. Divorce and family dis- cord are at all time highs. Moreover, stories of rising gas prices are mixed with coverage of conflict between warring factions around the globe. Yet, regardless of the .depiction of local and world events, for every heart wrench- ing story told there are countless stories of hope that are not covered by mass media. We need balanced coverage that includes those stories that paint a more encouraging and enlightened picture of humanity. We need stories that uplift people where we show more compelling examples of'compas-, sion and mercy. The great philosopher Epictetus said," Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the view they take of them." Positive peo- ple do intentional things to maintain a positive outlook. For example, if you want to be positive and up beat you gravitate toward things that help facilitate that mindset. On the contrary, you avoid those things that do not help you achieve or maintain a good outlook. With all of that in mind, I really missed my television and therefore I upgraded from a 19-inch throwback style and 1980 *technology to a new 32-inch high-defini- tion television with a premium sound sys- tem. Therefore, I am ready for some football! I am also a better consumer of the infor- mation, news and shows I watch. You have heard the old adage, "garbage in garbage out."
