Jax Ar NeWS, NAS Jacksonville, Thursday, March 30, 2006 9 CHAPLAIN'S CORNER The anchor of the soul By Chaplain t.) Joe Molina NAS Jax Chapel For most people hope carries the idea of wishful thinking. However, there is quite a distinct difference between the two. Let me explain: A handsome middle-aged man had been a widower for 14 months. His friends advised him to make some positive changes and do some new and interesting things. He took their advice and went on a seven-day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. While walking on the deck one morning he walked past a very attrac- tive lady about his age. She smiled at him. At that moment something jumped inside his heart. That evening he noticed her again at the dining room. She was sitting alone. He approached her and asked permission to join her for supper. In the course of con- versation he brought up the question: "Why did you smile at me today?" "Because you bear a strong resemblance to my second husband," she replied. "Oh, how many times have you been mar- ried?" he asked. "Once" she answered. Now, that is wishful thinking! There's also the example of the little girl who stashes away hundreds of sugar cubes because she was "hoping" for a horse. That is wishful thinking! There are those that are hoping against hope that the econ- omy will improve after beyond that accomplish- ment to dream new dreams and reach new goals. '* OK, so what is hope? .' H Well, you can start with a S- dictionary definition as fol- lows: 'w To desire with expecta- Stion of obtainment" (Merri- .' -,am Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition). The dictionary's approach tends to be general and fif&' bland but it's a start. I will expand on this definition by Chaplain (Lt.) Jose Molina stating that true hope is blindly investing thousands that, but also much more. I of dollars into the stock believe that hope is an market.
