Good wind helps regatta participants JaxAir NeWS, NAS Jacksonville, Thursday, April 21, 2005 13 7 By Phil Collins Mulberry Cove Marina Manager he second regatta (sailboat race) of the four-regatta Memorial One-Design se- ries started on a sunny day April 9. Sailing in front of the NAS Jax Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department's Mulberry Cove Marina and Navy Jackson- ville Yacht Club, nine Flying Scots entered the race, four of which were from NAS Jackson- ville. Winds started out at four to six knots, but increased to 15 knots by afternoon, making for some very fast races. The sailboats competed in five races throughout the afternoon and the final score resulted in a first place win for Dave Strickland and Melissa Gann of the Rudder Club, second place went to Donna Mohr and Jon Hamilton or the Rudder Club and our own NAS Jacksonville team of AWl Elmer DePalma and crewmembers Bruce and Sayse Knowles, placed third in the MWR sailboat. After the regatta, all the sailors enjoyed free food and refreshments at the Navy Jacksonville Yacht Club. The Memorial One Design series consists of four regattas through the summer, to deter- mine the 2005 Grand Champion. The same make and model sail- boats compete against one anoth- er, with the skills of the individ- ual sailors setting the winners apart. Race fees are $10 for the day's event and sailboats rented from Nine Flying Scots leaving the start line for the first race during a regatta April 9 sponsored by the Mulberry Cove Marina and NAS Jax Yacht Club. Mulberry Cove Marina are free (with a Skipper "B" card or onsite proof of knowledge). The next Memorial One-Design regatta will be the Ted Tanier race on Sept. 18. For those who cannot wait until then, there is the annual Armed Forces Regatta on May 21. Mulberry Cove Marina is a co-sponsor of this race and will offer its Flying Scots, Lasers, and Flying Juniors to NAS Jacksonville to compete.
