6 JaxAIr NeWS, NAS Jacksonville, Thursday, April 21, 2005 'Maulers' honor new supervisor of the quarter By Lt. j.g. Helen Watson VS-32 PAO 0 he "Maulers" of VS-32 recently selected AE1(AW/SW) Deme- trius Brown as their newest Su- pervisor of the Quarter. Brown earned the honor for his exceptional perform- ance as the Electrical/Instrument Branch leading petty officer in the Mauler Maintenance Department. Brown's resolute leadership of 20 junior personnel in the Electrical/ Instrument Branch played a key role in the squadron's combat readiness during the first quarter of 2005. His hard work provided for the smooth transfer of two fully mission capable S-3B Vikings from VS-32 to other squadrons, as well as the incorpora- tion of 18 improvement directives into squadron aircraft. His efforts also ensured the availability of an increased number of mission-ready jets, allowing the squadron to meet extensive mission requirements in aircrew training. Brown set an impressive example and was instrumental to many of his personnel attaining higher-level qual- ifications this past quarter. He contin- uously motivates the airmen in his AEI(AW/SW) Demetrius Brown's hard v jets mission-ready. shop to strive for excellence and effi- ciency while stressing safety meas- ures. Airmen under his guidance have recently been named the Plane Captain of the Year, Junior Mauler of the Year and Mauler of the Year. His Sailor of the Quarter award certifi- cate cites his superior leadership qualities along with his ability to bring the entire branch together to achieve common goals. These months are a busy time for service members who are moving household goods, due to overloaded packing crews and short supplies of trucks and stor- age capacity. Sailors can be better pre- pared for household goods moves by being informed, planning ahead, remaining flexible and using the SMART WebMove online moving tool. "Moving can be a stress- ful time for Navy families, but knowing what to expect and prior planning can alleviate many of the worries associated with household goods moves," noted Ron Fevola, NAVSUP's House-hold Goods director. Household Goods offers some helpful tips to help make moving easier for service members. Married service members should include their spouse during move counseling to better communicate moving needs. If one spouse cannot supervise the move, then the other spouse should be prepared to do so. "Both spouses also should know what to do in case of difficulty during a move, and know their responsibilities in releas- ing and accepting ship- ments," Fevola added. Household Goods advises that members can also avoid excess costs by taking the time to estimate shipment weights. It is their responsi- bility to keep personal prop- erty under their weight allowance; shipping excess weight can be expensive. Plans can change be- tween when the move application is made and the time the shipment is delivered. When any change occurs that could affect a shipment, mem- bers are encouraged to immediately contact the destination's personal property office with the new information. Chuck Picard pre- sented the original artwork for the VP-30 squadron insignia to Capt. Rich Heimerle, VP-30 command- ing officer. Heimerle accepted the artwork in front of squadron personnel during quarters that after- noon. Picard served as VP-30's maintenance officer under seven different commanding officers and headed the squadron's move from NAS Patuxent River, Md. to NAS Jacksonville. Picard and retired Navy Capt. Ron Castle, a former VP-30 command- ing officer, chose the design which has been the tail insignia on every VP-30 aircraft fpr more than 30 years. Upon his retirement in 1978, Castle present- ed Picard with the original artwork, which he held until April 13. "I feel that Hangar 30 is the rightful place for this historic piece of art," said Picard. "I've enjoyed having it over the years, but I'm glad to give it back to the squadron now. Besides, I will always see it when I see the tail insignia on a VP-30 P-3 flying over my house."
