New grant

he City of Jacksonville
 as enacted a special
 property tax reim-
bursement grant to qualified
military personnel serving
on combat duty who live in
Duval County. The Mil-itary
Affairs/Veterans Service
Office at City Hall is admin-
istering this program.
 "The city council, led by
District 5 Council Member
Art Shad, a veteran Marine
who served during Desert
Storm, sponsored this city
ordinance to show respect
and appreciation for those
serving in combat zones dur-
ing the war on terrorism,"
said Major Margaret
Weitzel, USMCR, who man-
ages the Military Affairs
and Veterans Services office.
 Qualified personnel
include all military resi-
dents who had a homestead
exemption on property in
Duval County and were
ordered 'nto a combat zone
during calendar year 2004.
 Those qualified are enti-
tled to a grant of up to
$2,000 per calendar year of
the ad valorem city tax con-
tribution. Applicants have
three years to file for this
reimbursement after the
year they served in a combat
zone.
 Active military combat
duty applies to military per-
sonnel who served in an
active capacity, including
active duty personnel,
reservists and National
Guard personnel, in a com-
bat zone for a named United
States military conflict.
 A combat zone is any area
the president designates by
executive order as an area
in which the U.S. Armed
Forces are engaging or have
engaged in combat.
 The process to obtain this
grant is fairly simple:
 Go to http://tc.coj.net/real
estate/ and obtain your real
estate number.
 Then, go to the tax collec-
tor's downtown office at 231
E. Forsythe Street and
obtain a copy of the paid
receipt of your taxes and
homestead exemption.
 Then obtain a copy of
 proof of combat service such
 as your leave and earning
 statement (LES) indicating
 combat pay during the peri-
 od applying for, letter from
 the respective unit com-
 mander or personnel office
 stating combat duty and
 dates, (or any other official
 certifiable documentation
 specifying dates of combat
 duty).
 Take these documents to
 the Veteran's Services
 Division at City Hall, Suite
 175 and your tax reimburse-
 ment will be processed.
