Robert Buehn Jr. will relieve Capt. James Cardosi in a Change of Command cere- mony at Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) Jax today at noon. Buehn graduated from the University of Florida in 1973, and worked as a reporter for the Stuart News in Stuart, Fla. for five years. He entered Aviation Officer Candidate School in February 1978 and was commissioned as an ensign in May. After completing jet flight training in Meridian, Miss., in 1980, Buehn reported to S-3A training at VS-41 in San Diego and then joined VS-24 at NAS Cecil Field. The squadron was involved in two Mediterranean deployments with USS Nimitz (CVN-68). Buehn qualified as a land- ing safety officer (LSO) at VS-41 from 1984 to 1986, followed by air wing LSO duty with Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard USS Constellation (CV-64). On the carrier he saw two deployments in the Northern and Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. In the Persian Gulf, his carrier group supported Operation Earnest. Will. The operation involved escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. He also was involved in cross training in the F-14. Buehn was selected in 1988 as Commander, Naval Air Force Pacific landing safety officer, in charge of all fleet and fleet replacement squadron LSO programs in Air Force Pacific. This was followed by serv- ice as maintenance officer in VS-28, aboard USS Forrestal (CV-59), where he flew missions over northern Iraq during Operation Provide Comfort. After attending the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., in 1993, he served as chief staff officer to Commander, Sea Control Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet at NAS Cecil Field. Assuming command of the VS-32 "Maulers" in 1995, Buehn led the squadron on the final deployment of USS America (CV-66) during Bosnia operations in the Adriatic. After being selected as the executive officer for USS Constellation, he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in 1997. After service aboard the car- rier, he helped establish the new Navy Welfare Development Command in Newport. Buehn assumed command of U.S. Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from May 2000 to March 2003. From there, he became chief of staff for Commander Carrier Strike Group 14, deploying to the North Arabian Gulf aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and to Summer Pulse 2004, the first test of the Navy's Fleet Response Plan. As a pilot, he has logged more than 5.000 flight hours and 860 carrier land- ings. He is married to the former Debra Witaschek of Lakewood, Colo. They have two sons, Tom and Will. Cardosi, assumed com- mand on April, 18, 2004. He led the facility to unprecedented success, sup- porting every fleet require- ment. He scheduled, de-conflict- ed and controlled over 100 large-scale operations, including the work-ups for six carrier battle groups, two Tomahawk operation tests, 37 Kennedy Space Center launches, and numerous missile exercises. He led the development and integration of the train- ing and resource strategy into the successful support of all mission requirements for the first three COMPTUEXs completed in the Jacksonville operating area, due to the closure of the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility ranges. Cardosi also oversaw the Northern Right Whale Fusion Center allowing Navy assets to safely oper- ate in and around the desig- nated critical habitat while maintaining an effective environmental conservation program for Right Whales. On June 1, 2004, he took command of the Pinecastle Bombing Range. His exem- plary achievements conclud- ed a distinguished 28-year Navy career. Cardosi is retiring from the Navy and he and his family plan to remain in the Jacksonville area. Palmer relieves Hollingsworth as VP-16 commanding officer VP-16 PAO Cmdr. Edward (Tad) Palmer will relieve Cmdr. Chuck Hol- lingsworth and assume command of the VP-16 "War Eagles" during a change of command cere- mony tomorrow in Hangar 1000. Palmer is a native of Florence, Ala. After grad- uating from the University of Alabama, where he obtained a bachelor's of science in electrical engineering, he attended Aviation Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in 1987. From 1989 to 1992 he deployed to Sigonella, Sicily, Italy and Keflavik, Iceland, as a member of the VP-16 War Eagles. Cmdr. Edward (Tad) Palmer Cmdr. Chuck Hollingsworth He served the squadron as the bear trap and tac- tics officer. In 1992, Palmer report- ed to VP-30 for duty as a fleet replenishment squadron (FRS) instruc- tor. In that capacity, he served as the mainte- nance administration offi- cer, schedules officer and the P-3 NATOPS evalua- tor.
