The "Heart Truth" Campaign offers the following quiz: Do you smoke? Is your blood pressure 140/90 mmHg or higher or have you been told by doctor that your blood pressure is too high? Has your doctor told you that your total cholesterol level is 200 mg/dL or higher, or your HDL (good choles- terol is less than 40 mg/dL? Has your father or brother had a heart attack before age 55 or your mother or sister had one before age 65? Do you have diabetes or a fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or higher, or do you need medicine to control your blood sugar? Are you over age 55? Do you have a body mass index (BMI) score of 25 or more?. Do you get less than a total of 30 minutes of physical activity on most days? Has a doctor told you that you have angina (chest pains), or have you had a heart attack? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are at an increased risk of having a heart attack. What are the warning signs of a heart attack? Chest discomfort. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. This may be felt in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stom- ach. Shortness of breath. May often occur with or before chest discomfort. Other signs. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness. Fast action saves lives If you or someone you are with begins to have chest discomfort, especially with one or more of the other symptoms of a heart attack, call 9-1-1 right away. Don't wait more than a few minutes 5 min- utes at the most to call 9-1-1. If you are having symp- toms and cannot call 9-1-1, have someone drive you to the hospital right away.
