Cmdr. Scott Olivolo Special Contributor Tt seems these days that debt, especially con- sumer debt, is all too common. The amount of debt per household, not including mortgage debt, is about $14,500. This is particularly note- worthy given that before the 1930s, most working class and middle class peo- ple had no major debts. In those days, banks would not lend to people in seri- ous debt. These days, banks (who now issue credit cards) seek out customers who charge beyond their means so they can capture the whopping 18-20 percent interest rates. Ah, the world has changed! The first step in avoiding debt is understanding debt. This article will focus on debt in terms of good debt vs. bad debt so you can: Manage debt logically Work towards living a debt-free lifestyle. According to BankRate. com, "Good debt either pro- duces cash flow or is some- thing that can write-off interest, or is an asset that can appreciate over time." For instance, mortgage debt can be considered good debt as long as you can pay your mortgage comfortably each month. If you are trying to reduce current high-inter- est credit card debt, then perhaps a low-interest home equity loan may be considered good debt. Bad debt includes debt you've accumulated for things you cannot afford using high- interest credit cards. It's very easy to lose track of how Much you charge on credit Cards, and then end up pay- Sing partial interest for long periods of time. According to the Consu- mer Credit Counseling Ser- vice, a not-for-profit entity, "A typical credit card pur- chase ends up costing 112 percent more than if cash were used. For example, a $1,000 charge on an average credit card will take almost 22 years to pay, and will cost more than $2,300 in interest ($3,300 total) if only two percent minimum payments are made." Another form of bad debt is the ever-popular auto loan. This type of loan is called an installment loan, and although the interest rate does not normally run as high as credit cards, pay- ing off your auto loan early can be a smart move. For instance, let say you finance an $18,000 car for five years (60 months) at 9.5 percent interest. If you pay an extra $50 per month, you will save almost $800 and decrease your loan contract by eight. months. Beware that some auto loan contracts may have pre-payment penalties. According to Mike Ross at Vystar Credit Union, "Folks' should read their auto loan contract to make sure no pre-payment penalty provi- sions are included, borrow only from reputable finance sources, and when in doubt, have it reviewed by either a lawyer, seasoned loan offi- cer, or command financial specialist." When it comes to debt management, our grand- parent's old-fashioned val- ues should be our beacon-, spend only what we can afford and save for what we really want.
