As these enthusiastic fans tried to convert me into a Twi-hard, I noticed two things. First, their 12-year-old daughters were rolling their eyes at how their mothers were so carried away by the movie. Secondly, and most notably, nobody tried to convince me that the "Twilight" movies are actually any good. The actors may be "dreamy" and the stories may have the pulpy appeal of a Harlequin Romance novel, but the movies have been mediocre at best. Even the film's biggest fans admit that the movies are little more than a teenage melodrama with supernatural flourishes. "Twilight: Eclipse" comes closer to quality than either of the earlier two installments of the franchise. It is, in fact, the best "Twilight" film so far, but that's the very definition of damning with faint praise. This time around, Bella (Kristen Stewart) is still torn between her love for the vampire, Edward (Robert Pattinson) and her best friend/werewolf, Jacob (Taylor Lautner). The two rivals for Bella affections must put away their animosity because Victoria (Dallas Bryce Howard) has gathered a vampire army and intends to get a little revenge on Bella and the Cullen family. "Twilight: Eclipse" is better than the previous two films because of this plot, which provides ample opportunity for the filmmakers to spice up the proceedings with supernatural action sequences. Even I must admit that the werewolf special effects are rather impressive. More action means more energy, and to my delight, less of the insufferable teenage love triangle. Then again, at least this time around we have a story where both Edward and Jacob are in the same place at the same time. Anyone who saw the last movie knows that it's hard to create tension in the love triangle when the male characters don't even have any scenes together. The filmmakers have wisely rectified this problem in "Eclipse." Ultimately, the film does boil down to a chaste, teenage love story. It's pulpy and overwrought, precisely the emotional mix that makes me roll my eyes but obviously appeals to teenage girls, and especially their mothers. If you're a fan of the series, you will still enjoy "Twilight: Eclipse." If you're the chaperoning father, or another film critic forced to see this movie, you have my sympathies. Ñ New Guinea, due north of Australia, was invaded by the Japanese in 1942 and became a key World War II battlefield. Many men died there, and many remain there. To some they might be forgotten casualties of war. But not to Marjorie Ploeger, a recent 23year-old graduate of Minnesota State University, and others in the 32-member search group that spent a two-week foray into the steamy, dangerous, mountain jungles on the South Pacific Island. The largest-ever civilian search for MIAs servicepeople missing in action since World War II identified 92 plane crash sites in New Guinea plus a burial mound of innumerable American, Australian and Japanese soldiers. Ploeger, a history buff, said she wanted in on the mission because she's always been moved by that war's saga and the horrific loss of life. "I had no idea that there are still over 70,000 MIAs from World War II, and that's extremely unacceptable." Group members received more than a dozen pre-trip inoculations to stave off disease, but Ploeger was unprepared for the jungle poison ivy she encountered. "It literally made my skin boil. I still have scars." She also broke two toes climbing mountainous terrain eight hours a day, and another group member was attacked by a dog. Ploeger said temperatures never dipped below 85 even at night and she trekked with a 30-pound pack at all times. Even so, she described the trip as an "awesome experience." When a crash site was found searchers looked for those in lieu of human remains long gone each was treated as holy burial ground and left undisturbed. No mission member was allowed to take items from the sites nor disclose their locations for three years to give the U.S. Army time to complete its MIArecovery effort. This is the 20th year of the MIAHunters group founded by 82-year-old mission leader Bryan Moon and is regarded as the most successful MIAsearch organization in the United States. Members paid their own way, accepted all risks of jungle exploration and received two extensive pre-mission briefings. But nothing quite prepared them for when they were confronted by an 8-foot python. It was killed and then cooked by a villager. "The taste is between chicken and alligator," Ploeger said. Since our 12-year -old daughter, Emma, really, really, really, really, really, really wanted to go, we decided we would go on opening day. "How bad could it be?" I asked. Answer: How many Harry Potter books have been sold in the past 10 years? When we started walking into the park I noticed that it was crowded but not overly crowded. I took that to be a good sign. But, when we got closer to the park, I saw a long line of people backed up as far as I could see. I took that to be a bad sign. "This isn't a line," I said to my wife and Emma. "This is Woodstock." "What's Woodstock?" Emma asked. "It doesn't matter," I said. The three of us stood in the Woodstock-like line. It was hot. The sun was shining down brightly and there was no shade. After about 20 minutes we noticed that the Woodstocklike line hadn't moved. My wife, thinking that perhaps we were in the line for people trying to purchase tickets, asked a guy standing next to us if he had tickets. "Yeah," he said. "My family is already inside. They got here at 7 and didn't get in until 10." I took that to be a bad sign. It was beginning to dawn on me that we probably weren't going to get into the Harry Potter theme park. Even if we did get in, I reasoned, there would be nowhere to move in the park. The problem, as far as I good see, was that we had a 12-year-old girl who was really, really, looking forward to seeing the Harry Potter theme park. But, hey, life is full of disappointments. It's time that Emma experienced a few. It's time that Emma learns that she doesn't always get what she wants. That life isn't fair. That sometimes life gives you lemons. So I decided to break the news to her bluntly. I decided to treat our 12-year-old daughter like an adult. "Emma, I said. "I'm buying you a car." Ha. I joke. Nope, what I did was explain the situation to Emma. I explained that it was going to take hours to get into the park. I explained that once we got into the park it would take hours before she would be able to ride one of the rides, and hours after that before she would be able to ride another one. Emma was disappointed. Heck, I was disappointed. So was my wife. But Emma was also realistic. But not so realistic that she didn't hold a slight grudge. "This park is jank," is what Emma said. If you don't know, what Emma was saying was: "This park sucks." But our trip to Universal Studios wasn't all bad. It just so happens the Woodstock-like line we were standing in was right next to Jimmy Buffett's place where my wife drowned her sorrows in a margarita, I drowned mine in a beer and Emma drowned hers in a Coke. After a while, Emma was able to smile and later she even laughed about the Woodstock-like line. But I'm sorry, Universal folks. Emma still thinks your park is jank. However, children, young adults and even babies can have cataracts. What Are Cataracts? A cataract forms when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. The lens is responsible for focusing light onto the retina. The reason for cloudiness could be due to protein changes in the lens. With nuclear cataracts, the most common kind of cataract, the inside of the lens is affected. In cortical cataracts, the outside of the lens is affected. Cataracts grow quite slowly, meaning it can be years before they impact vision significantly. While they are often found in the elderly and progress as one ages, babies can be born with cataracts (known as congenital cataracts). Cataracts can be the result of steroid use. Also, younger adults can experience cataracts from a systemic illnesses, like diabetes. Cataracts may also form in smokers. Doctors say that not smoking can greatly reduce the risk for nuclear cataracts. Research indicates that women are at a higher risk for cataracts than men. It could be because cataracts develop more pronounced as individuals age. Women generally live longer than men. Cataract Symptoms Symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, dulled colors, appearance of halos around bright lights at night, and the need for brighter light when reading. Symptoms of cataracts cannot be remedied with reading glasses or other prescriptions. Treatment for Cataracts The most common treatment for cataracts that cause considerable vision impairment is surgery. A cataract will be removed only if it interferes with vision enough to prevent a person from driving, reading, or doing other essential activities. A "ripe" cataract can be extracted by an eye surgeon in a routine sur gery. If cataracts are present in both eyes, surgery will be performed one at a time. The procedure is called phacoemulsification, or phaco. An eye surgeon will make a small incision into the side of the cornea. A probe is inserted where ultrasound waves will gradually break up the cloudy cataract. A suction then removes the pieces. Recovery time varies among patients but could be a week or two. The eye will be covered with a protective wrap for a few days. Eye drops may have to be administered daily. Eventually protective sunglasses will block out bright light from the eye. One should also avoid activities that could affect the eye, such as dusty conditions, changing a litter box, bending over or doing heavy lifting, or splashing water in the eye. Most outcomes of cataract surgery are successful. Vision is restored to at least 20/40, the acceptable level for driving. For those experiencing vision trouble, consult with an optometrist to determine if cataracts are the cause.Get the Facts About Cataracts releasing her own album, "Six White Horses," she also plays on several other Florida folk albums, including Mark Johnson, Anna Moo (with Bo Diddley) and Fay Baird (of the Short Sisters). Carrying on the legacy of traditional music, she holds old-time jams for children, teaches music privately and is the music teacher at Gainesville Country Day School. Amulti-instrumentalist that plays guitar, piano, bass and banjo, Janet Rucker is best-known for her distinctive voice, described by one producer as "fragile, yet powerful; vulnerable, yet confident." Aveteran of countless bands, she is in high demand as a session singer at local recording studios. Her original songs compose a large part of Patchwork's repertoire, and her "Florida Home" was recently one of the winners in the Will McLean Best New Florida Song songwriting contest. She performed in the Hippodrome State Theatre's 1987 production of "Hair," and, before forming Patchwork, she toured the festival circuit from Colorado to Atlanta to Florida with her band, Country Love. Rucker is a member of many bands, including Antidote. An eclectic musician whose roots branch out from classical and folk music to jazz, Cathy Dewitt plays piano and guitar and sings. Several of her original compositions are on the Patchwork song list, including "The Waves Roll In," a winner in the 1999 Gamble Rogers Song Contest. She has played at clubs and festivals throughout the state for more than 20 years, including the Florida Folk Festival. She performed with Florida legends Will McLean and Don Grooms, and has sung with Tom Paxton, Dave Frishberg, Garrison Keillor and others. In addition to hosting "Across the Prairie," a popular folk music program on WUFT, Dewitt is the music director/musician in residence for the Artsin-Medicine Program at Shands Hospital, and presents national workshops on music and healing. She won the National League of American Penwomen (Gainesville branch) Award for Music in 2000. Agraduate of the University of Florida's music program, Jolene Stone Jones is in demand for her wide vocal range. Her soaring harmonies and rhythmic mandolin playing are a distinctive part of Patchwork's sound. She has performed in several local bands, as well as in the University of Florida production of "Madame Butterfly." Amusic teacher, she has presented various workshops at festivals and schools throughout the area, and her high harmony vocals have graced many a studio project. Annie McPhearson grew up playing music and singing, influenced by her mother who was a trained vocalist and piano player. An eclectic musician, she won second place in mandolin and second place in beginning banjo at the Old Time Music Championships in 2001, and started playing acoustic bass with Patchwork in 2006. She also sings, plays piano and loves to play bluegrass, old time, swing standards and country music with her husband David Cook. The script is emotional without being sappy, touching without being melodramatic. This film, as with last year's "Up", creates characters so real that you feel their pain as well as their joy. There are very few live action films that I can say that about; in comparison, James Cameron's cartoon hybrid "Avatar" has the emotional heft of a dime store romance novel. How, exactly, does a shopper achieve that? It involves a strategic combination of matching high-value coupons to low sales, then using multiples of coupons for those same items. Toss in coupons for free products and use any coupon overage (where the coupon value exceeds the cost of the product, giving you "extra money" to apply to other items you're purchasing) and you're well on your way to shopping like a pro. Here are a few more secrets of TV shopping trips, and how you can apply these techniques to your own grocery bill. Focus on ÔBuy One, Get One Free' coupons Using BOGO coupons will obviously allow you to take home two items for the price of one Ð a great way to add multiple items to your cart but only pay for half of them. And, if you can combine those BOGOs with an instore promotion you can cash in on even bigger savings. Catalina promotions are a couponer's friend. Anytime a store runs a Catalina promotion offering money back for buying specific items included in the sale, it's a great opportunity to stock up and actually receive money back at the end of a trip. A recent sale at one of my local stores advertised "Buy $25 worth of participating cleaning products, receive $10 back for your next shopping trip." This is already a good deal, but remember that the $25 total purchase requirement is typically pre-coupon. I used several BOGO coupons for a variety of cleaning products, and after coupons my total for the $25 worth of products dropped to $11.48. After paying, I received a $10 Catalina coupon printed out at the register good for $10 off my next shopping trip. Coupon shoppers consider this kind of Catalina almost as good as cash. Factoring that Catalina in, I paid just $1.48 for $25 worth of cleaning products! It's fun to work Catalina promotions into a TV shopping trip, too. Not only do I aim for a low total at the register, but I also get money back in the form of a Catalina. It's icing on a coupon-shopper's cake! So how can your own shopping trip match that of a professional's? First, understand that not every week's shopping trip will be so dramatic. But you can use the same tips I've outlined to reduce your own grocery bill each week. My weekly grocery shopping trips average between $40-$60 for my family of five. However, I usually buy more than $100 worth of groceries before coupons. That's about a 40-60 percent reduction in my grocery budget every week, which quickly adds up to big savings! Anyone can enjoy great savings by matching coupons to sales. But, when you hit a great sale in which everything lines up well, you may have reason to brag. Just this week in one of my Super-Couponing classes, a shopper proudly showed me the receipt from a recent shopping trip. She's only been couponshopping for four months, but she's already expertly matching coupons to sales. Her receipt? She bought $47 worth of products. After coupons, she paid just over $2 for everything! That's a trip even a TV pro would be proud of! © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. Of the group of six that I was with, each of us had our own particular favorite part, and arguments could be made for each without diminishing the validity of the others. As with the previous films, this is a kid's movie with a great deal of appeal to adults. From the homage to escape movies to the parody of the ubiquitous "fashion show" scenes from films such as "Pretty Woman" to a Flamenco dancing Buzz, there are little pieces that work to suck every age group in. There are also some nods to the previous installments, as well as other Pixar films, including a cameo by Sid from "Toy Story," the return of Pizza Planet and a nod to Buy N Large, the conglomerate that brought about the downfall of Earth in "Wall-E." One of my two complaints, and a minor one at that, has to do with this same aspect. As much as I love them, the "Toy Story" seContinued From Page 3 ries belongs first to children, and should be accessible as such. Yet there is a lengthy (and very funny) segment in which one of the characters speaks Spanish and is subtitled. Great for the adults, but my 5and 7year-old daughters were lost. As much as I felt "Up" benefited from the use of 3-D, it did nothing to enhance "Toy Story 3." Unnecessary yet again, it felt like another add on to bump up interest and box office grosses. The film stands alone without the added flash, and it is a shame the producers couldn't see this to begin with and just let the final product speak for itself. The Pixar team is computer animation; Dreamworks, Blue Sky and the like may be able to create approximations, but they all pale in comparison to the originals. Pixar has turned filmmaking into an art form, understanding that each piece of the moviemaking process is as important as every other piece, and none are to be rushed. If I have to wait 11 years between "Toy Story" films, I'll be glad to wait if the end result is this good. This isn't your typical throw away children's entertainment. This, along with the rest of the Pixar library, will stand the test of time and will be visited by future generations much as Walt Disney's earlier films are still watched today. This is the movie that will define the summer of 2010. Benji Tunnell writes for The Joplin (Mo.) Globe. CNHI News Service distributes his column.
