Coach of the Year: Derek Garland, Lafayette-Garland took a fairly young group of girls all the way to the schools first ever state title game appearance. With a demanding schedule that featured games against Suwannee (20-10), Columbia (20 wins), Madison County (playoff), Santa Fe (20 wins, play- offs) and Williston (20 wins, Final Four participant), Lafayette struggled early on starting 1-3 before limping into the play- offs at 11-10. Branford chose not to send any stats, therefore no one was nominated. The Hamilton County High summer boys basket- ball team attended Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes team camp July 24-26 in Cochran, GA. The players enjoyed their time of playing games, at- tending chapel services, and hanging out together. Although with 8 games in the first day and a half, there wasn't much energy left for the "hanging out" part of it. Coach Patrick Murphy reports that the behavior of the students was good and that the team as a whole represented Hamilton County well. As for the basketball games against Georgia high schools, that part went pretty well, too. The Trojans ended up going 6-3 for the camp. There was no tournament, just "pool" play. Games consisted of two 18 minute running- clock halves except for the final two minutes of the game. The Trojans began camp Thursday afternoon with a win over Putnam County 61-48 on the strength of some good free throw shooting (made 11 of 13 foul shots). A few hours later, Hamilton took on Taylor County, GA and battled hard. Unfortunately, it was not enough against Taylor as Hamilton lost 46-34. Taylor would go on to an undefeated record at camp and end as the best overall team for the weekend. Hamilton gave them their second toughest game of the camp, behind TCC. Later that night, Hamil- ton lost to Jones County, GA 51-40, giving Hamilton a 1-2 record for the first day of camp. Things changed for the better on Friday, however, as the Trojans rolled over Thomas County Central's #2 team 45-34. In their sec- ond game of the day, Hamilton faced Thomas County Central's #1 team and only trailed by 5 with 5 minutes to go. Unfortu- nately, they could keep it no closer for the rest of the game, and ended up losing 53-36 to the team with the second best record in camp. Hamilton didn't quit, though, and went on to win three consecutive games on Friday, starting with a 20 point win over Lowndes High's JV team. They followed that up with a 68-33 win over Colquitt County and ended the day with a win over Bleckley County #2 by five points. After day 2 of camp, Hamilton had a 5-3 overall record. By Saturday, the players were exhausted and played only one game, winning on a buzzer beat- ing three point shot over Colquitt 44-43. It was a nice ending for a fun camp and gave the Trojans a 14-4 summer record at this point in the summer. "The summer record may not count but it's nice to see the guys working hard and enjoying their summer so far" said coach Patrick Murphy.
