I Sports Section B Thursday, February 12, 2009 HCHS Trojan basketball Submitted HAMILTON 54 MADISON 61 Friday night, the Hamilton County High School varsity boys bas- ketball team traveled to Madison to take on the Madison County High School Cowboys. The first quarter was evenly played as teams weht back and forth throughout. However, HCHS would take a 14- 10 lead at the end of the period. The second quarter was all Madison as Hamilton committed 9 turnovers in this quarter alone to help the Cow- bodys get easy buckets the other way. Madi- son's Deangelo Tucker also got hot in the quar- ter, knocking down con- secutive three pointers to help propel the Cow- boys to a 14 point half- time lead, 36-22., The Trojans started the second half by scor- ing first on a steal and layup by sophomore guard Anthony Ingram.- After a Madison jumper, junior forward passed to junior guard Courtney McCloud for a score to make it 38-26. After a Madison jumper, the Trojans scored the game's next 5 points. Cooks canned a three pointer from the wing and Bailey scored on an offensive putback. However, the Cowboys came right back with 4 points of their own mak- ing the score Madison 45-31. IHamilton then went onp big 9-0 run cutting Madison's lead to 5 points. Vincent Bailey led the charge with a 3 pointer, a blocked shot, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.. l adison ended the ruRn with a free throw and a layup but the Tro- ja came right back wi a nice move by\Bai- ley'to cut the lead to 6 points, 48-42. Madison sandwiched a Bailey 3 point play wivt a few baskets of their own to end the thi4d quarter with a 52- 45 lead. The fourth quarter was highlighted by good defense and missed shots from both teAis. Trailing by 9 wit about 4 minutes re- ma ning in the game, Ge ld Bristol got a steal anO scored while also gefing fouled. After thi, TiWan Cooks made 1 Qf 2 free throws and Robert Davis followed with a steal and pass to Courtney McCloud. Mc- Cloud scored on a dri- ving layup to make the score 57-53 Madison. Infoftunately, the Trojans would not draw any closer as the Cow- boys went on to win the district contest 61-54. "While I was pleased with the team's effort in the second half, we dug too deep a hole in the second quarter to crawl out. At least I saw our guys fight back and I think that will serve us well as the season goes on" said Coach Murphy after the game. Trojans were led in scoring by junior for- ward Vincent Bailey's ,19 points. The only other Trojan scoring in double figures was sophomore guard Anthony Ingram, who had 10 points. Oth- er Hamilton scorers in- cluded Ti'Wan Cooks (8), Courtney McCloud (6), Robert Davis (4), Jacaris Stubbs (4) and Gerald Bristol (3). The rebounding battle was close throughout with the Cowboys edg- ing the Trojans out in to- tal rebounds 46-44. HCHS was led in re- bounding by Vincent Bailey's 17 boards. Other Trojans who had re- bounds included the fol- lowing: Cooks, Ingram, Davis, and Eric McClain each had 5 rebounds; Stubbs (4); Wesley Oliv- er (2); and Gerald Bristol (1). Of the Trojan's 17 as- sists, Vincent Bailey had 5 to lead the team. Cooks and Davis con- tributed 3 assists a piece. Anthony Ingram and Gerald Bristol led the team in steals with 4 each. Davis also con- tributed 3 thefts on the night. Bailey was the team leader in blocked shots, finishing with 4. HAMILTON 69 TAY- LOR 51 The Trojans had to get off the carpet quickly as they turned right around and played host to district foe: Taylor County the following night. It was a solid per- formance by the home team. Hamilton. led throughout, and pulled away in the second half. It was a very good over- all performance. "I was proud of how our team bounced back from last night's loss in Madison. It showed a lot character and that will help us in the long run" said Coach Murphy. HCHS was led in scor- ing by Vincent Bailey's season high 35 points. Junior guard Courtney McCloud finished with 14 points. Other Trojans who scored were as fol- lows: Anthony Ingram (7); Ti'Wan Cooks (4); Jacaris Stubbs (3); Ger- ald Bristol (3); and Eric McClain (3). And both Wesley Oliver and Ken- neth, Coffee had 1 re- bound.
