We had eager and willing participants that showed much heart and determi- nation to improve skills. They worked extremely hard and smart, under extreme weather condi- tions, to become better soccer players. The camp took place at the Hamilton County Recreation Center Soccer Complex from June 9, through June 13. The players learned numer- ous soccer skills such as: ball handling, passing, proper kicking tech- niques, defense, rules of the game, etc. They also participated in competi- tive matches against each other. The coaching staff would like to specifically thank the following sponsors: Sunny's Food Mart of Jasper, Just Play It Sports of Live Oak, and our silent sponsors that contributed in making this camp a great success. We would also like to thank the Hamilton County Recreation Cen- ter for allowing us to use their soccer facilities. Campers, learning is an everyday thing. In or- der for you to continue to improve your game, don't forget to practice some of the drills you learned at camp. The camp coaching staff and volunteers have decided to hold some friendly games/practices throughout the year. We would like to get togeth- er and "just play" once or twice a month. Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Cost-Share Program to begin accepting new applications Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson announced recently that the depart- ment's Division of Forestry is re-offering the Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Cost ,Share Program to eligible non- industrial private forest landowners. The goal of thp program is to mini- Smize southern pine bee- tle damage in Florida by helping forest landown- ers reduce the suscepti- bility of their pine stands to this destructive insect pest. Periodic southern pine ! beetle outbreaks in Flori- da have resulted in mil- : lions of cubic feet of pine timber killed on thou- Ssands of acres. Forest management practices, such as thinning, pre- scribed burning, other competition control, and use of less-susceptible pine species can im- prove the health of pine stands and decrease their likelihood of devel- oping southern pine bee- tle infestations. The program offers up to 50% cost reimburse- ment for pre-commercial thinning, prescribed. burning and mechanical underbrush treatments in existing pine stands, and a $50 per acre incen- tive payment for landowners who con- duct a first pulpwood thinning. In addition, landown- ers may apply to receive up to 50% reimburse- ment for the cost of lon- gleaf seedlings and $25 per acre in planting cost assistance to establish a longleaf pine plantation. The program is limited to 44 northern Florida counties located within the range of the southern pine beetle. Qualified landowners may apply for up to two approved practices per year. The minimum tract size re- quirement is 10 acres and funding requests may not exceed $10,000. For an application and more information on program requirements and procedures, forest landowners can visit their local Division of -Forestry office or contact the county forester office in their area by visiting www.fl-dof.com. Appli- cations will be available beginning July 30 and will be evaluated on a first-received, first- served basis. The pro- gram is supported through temporary grants from the USDA Forest Service and will be offered only as long as funding is available.
