F f f aCL7n on and' cook I amir 404469- ^--Ir2Z x^x)Zr about ~i hliri SA By: Dr Steven Stylianos Chief of Pediatric Surgery, Mi- ami Children's Hospital The dramatic increase of traffic during the Thanks- giving weekend can create dangerous highway condi- tions. The combination of long-distance travel, heavy traffic and Thanksgiving fes- tivities is a potential recipe for disaster, making the hol- iday one of the highest ranked for car crashes due to impaired driving. In 2004, 453 fatalities oc- curred during Thanksgiving travel, and almost 40 percent of those fatalities were alco- hol-related. Too many peo- ple still take the attitude that "it will never happen to me," but fatal crashes can happen, they do happen, and sadly, they. will happen this Thanksgiving weekend, so travelers should be on alert to ensure that the holi- day is a safe one. The first step to safe trav- eling is to plan your trip. The Sunday after Thanks- giving is one of the most heavily traveled days of the year, with more than 27 mil- lion Americans on the road - 11 million driving more than 100 miles and 16 million dri- ving shorter distances. Travelers should be on Cottag by Rick Leland The ivords danced out of her mouth: "Momma and grandma are number one, Jesus is number two and cot- tage cheese is number three." While fueling herself with the white milky curds, eleven-year-old Sharnae shared her philosophy of life. Immediately.dher brother Robert protested, "Cottage cheese can't be number three!" His choice for num- ber three it had to be fami- ly. He did concede that cot- tage cheese could rank fourth in her life. I protest also. For the record I place Jesus as num- ber one. And cottage cheese as the number three priority. in life or even number four? No way. That slot should be full alert en route to their destinations and consider traveling on Tuesday, Nov. 20, two days before Thanks- giving or on the Monday af- ter the holiday, Nov. 26, days when heavy holiday traffic is less likely. Next, Thanksgiving trav- elers must remember to obey all traffic laws, includ- ing buckling up, slowing down and designating a sober driver. More than half of passengers and drivers killed in crashes in 2004 were not wearing safety belts, even though, they are the single most effective means of protection when traveling. Speed also often contributes to the most hor- rific crashes, and was an ele- ment in 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 2004. Slowing down will help ensure that you arrive to the Thanksgiv- ing feast safely, Additional- ly, remember to designate a sober driver before the fes- tivities if you plan to con- sume alcohol to provide a safe trip home. Finally, be sure to give thanks for safety this Thanksgiving. With keen awareness and cautious dri- ving, Thanksgiving week- end is sure to be safe and fun for every traveler. a cheese for pizza. Or, nachos, or barbequed chicken; or your favorite food. Let's be real. I love gpod food; you love good food. But, I need to move it down the list. The Bible talks often about food, with one of the more peculiar references being the diet of John the Baptist. Ac- cording to Jesus, there was no greater man than John the Baptist. Yet, did he eat a great man's diet? The Bible has these diet- adjusting, tasty words: "I will praise God as long as I live, and in God's name I will lift my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest foods." Praising God, that 'was John's diet for a great man.
