THE JASPER- --. 1NEwS.Jae. F TURDA- UGST17 20 Hamilton County Booster Club The Hamilton County Trojan Booster Club held their first meeting of the season on Friday, Aug. 11. There was a great turn out with lots of enthusiasm. Coach Green gave an encouraging and optimistic outlook for the upcoming Tro- jan football season. The Trojans begin their season Friday night in Perry, with a full schedule to follow. The Booster Club will sponsor several fundraisers soon, with 100 percent of the funds collected benefiting the team. Some of the upcoming events are ads for football programs, chicken dinner fundraisers and muzzle loader raffle tick- ets. If you are interested in buying an ad for the program call Sandy McCall at 792-2345 or Sylvia Cone at 938-3041. The deadline for ads will be Aug. 25. If you are interested in cooking, serving or delivering chicken dinners or in buying some dinners, contact Randy or Melody McCoy at 938-4370 or Sylvia Cone. We are blessed to have such great kids so let's all come out and support them. Patterns are especially important this time of year and the same one is applicable in most regions be they north, south, east or west. The best place to start patterning summertime bass is offshore. During the summer, the key tc success is water quali- ty: Wherever you find the best and most sta- ble water quality, you will find the best and most stable bass fish- ing. Though water temperature might be key in most seasons (especially spring- time), "quality water" in the summer is deter- mined by oxygen and pH levels. First, consider sunlight penetration, which is de- termined by the water's color and its effect on light penetration. The growth of plankton causes a change in the pH and oxygen levels of the water. If the water you fish has a greenish color tc it, you most likely have a. lot of plankton meaning that the pH levels will vary greatly between times of sunlight and darkness. Because of this, fish will find the most sta- ble water conditions in the water column at the fur- 3 thest reaches of the sun- light's penetration to keep 3 from having to move 2 every time the sun rises t and sets. Try to determine at what depth you see the t most fish activity. Once you determine the key depth, look for bass cover in that area of the water column. Once you've found those, look to see where the edges of two or more of those structures intersect to find the key feeding and holding areas for bass. When these inter- sections contain ridges, points or other high spots in the bottom contour, they are very attractive to bass. To target them, I rely on two techniques. The first is the tried-and-true Texas-rigged worm. My favorite rig consists of a tungsten sinker in three- sixteenths to three- eighths-ounce size de- pending on water depth and wind. I normally use a Berkley Gulp! Turtle Back worm tied to Berkley Vanish Transition fluoro- carbon. My go-to lure during the BASS tour stop at Lake Oneida was a Berkley Gulp! four-inch Sinking Minnow in Watermelon Red Glitter. I rigged the Sinking Minnow wacky style on a size one hook tied to eight- pound Berkley Vanish Transition fluorocar- bon with a one-eighth ounce tungsten drop shot weight about 10 inches below the hook. There's lots of ways to catch fish during the summer, but under- standing the keys to bass behavior can help you en- joy more productive days on the water and catch bigger fish. So if you plan to wet a line during these dog days, try heading off shore and figure out where the big ones are to improve your skills as an angler.
