Media specialist Ms. Zant thanks all the volunteers who helped and all the students and parents who made purchases. What a great investment in your child's reading future! Mrs. Carter's first graders discussed the meaning of Veterans Day and learned about what each color on the flag rep- resents red for courage, white for purity, and blue for justice. We also learned that the stars represent the 50 states. Students shared about relatives in the mili- tary and wrote an essay about freedom. We wore patriotic red, white, and blue, and ended the day by attending the school-wide Veterans Day program. This month's character word is "gratitude." Mrs. Tyre's second graders did a good job writing on this theme. Marcus Urzua-Diaz wrote: "At all times, we need the help of others. Sometimes the people can help you, and when this happens, you need to say 'Thank You' because this is gratitude. Every morning when you wake up, the first thing you need to say is thanks to God for all the help that you give me every morning and every day of my life, and thank the Lord for the teacher. That is having gratitude to the Lord and others that help every day." Cassidy Byrd wrote: "Gratitude is the feeling you get when you feel thankful for something. Like, I showed gratitude to my sister by giving her a hug for cleaning my room. Another way to show grat- itude is to say 'Thank you' to someone when they do something nice for you." Ethan Brantley wrote: "Gratitude is thankfulness. When someone does something nice for you, show them gratitude. One way is to write a thank you note. Another way is by giving the person a hug and telling them thank you. One time, I stayed with my Nanny and Papa and when I left, I gave them a hug and told them thank you." Claire Griner wrote: "Gratitude is a feeling of being thankful. To be grateful is a kind of grati- tude. To show my grati- tude, I will help others. A note of thanks is a way to express your gratitude." Kindergartners are busy with phonics / spelling words.
