Jackson County Floridan Sunday, November 2, 2008 3B www.JCFLORIDAN.com LOCAL Good upbringing can help you grow old gracefully By THOMAS VINCENT'MURPHY As we go through the dif- ferent phases of life, we must continuously make adjustments. How we go from one transition to another, is very important to the quality of life we each will experience. The manner in which a child is raised initially can determine how smoothly his future will'be. When a *young child begins school, his or her personality, demeanor, dis- cipline and habits will come into play within the classroom. Whatever training a child has been given in the early years of life will affect them on a regular basis. In reaching middle school, junior high, and senior high school, many challenges face our children. The early and middle years of school life are often some of the most influential years in life. How you walk, how you talk, how you dress and your personality come into strong focus. Some of our young ladies began using make-up for the first time in order to impress the young men. For many of the young men, body language and how they communicate vocally can .put them in a certain category. Some folks stray from their initial up-bringing in the peer pressure years between middle school, junior high school and high school. The years that follow should bring new views of what life is all about.. What decisions should you make about education, serious dating or occupational opportunities? - I feel that if you are given positive attention and love as a child, even though you may get side-tracked, that early training can always come back and give you a boost when you need it. After college (if you attend college), or when you begin making more of your decisions without your mother or father, "life in the real world" kicks in. In reality, many people that grow up in an unfortu- nate atmosphere are forced into facing life and some of its hard decisions at an early time in life. By the time people reach "middle age", (in most cases) they are expected to be settled into a. relatively consistent lifestyle. The age of an individual heading into the senior years of life is not as easy to determine during this day and time as. it was in the past. .1I have seen grandparents of today that are energetic, youthful looking, busy and excited about life. On many occasions when a person's age is revealed (if they choose to reveal their age) I am very surprised at how many older people are maintaining their youthful- ness. On the flip side; some people do not know how to grow old gracefully. They insist on trying to live in the past; by the way they act, dress and present them- selves. It's great to be young at heart and look great, but it is important to keep life in the proper perspective. By looking great and staying healthy, older citi- zens can be great examples for our younger citizens. The elderly are very special to me! If you want to learn how to avoid some of the pitfalls of life, take time to talk to the senior citizens and the elderly. Usually, by the time they have reached this pinnacle of life they have learned many good and bad lessons; and since they can't move as fast or get around as well, one of the joys of their life might be talking to oth- ers. Because many of our eld- erfy have made spiritual adjustments in their lives, often the advice they share can be very important and uplifting to others. Murphy Life can be exciting, depressing, full of surpris- es, uncertain and unpre- dictable. Through it all I am happy to wake up each day and say, "Thank God for another day"!
