LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Writer shares her e-mail to school superintendent Dear Editor Please see my e-mail below to School Superintendent Danny Sims regarding the recent incident involving teacher Greg' Howard's racially offensive actions. If appropriate, please print this as a letter to the edi- tor in the Floridan. Thank you, Glenda Neel Pender Mr. Sims, I am writing to .you as a Jackson County native (born in Jackson Hospital in 1944) regarding the shockingly inap- propriate behavior of Greg Howard wherein he talked in his classroom about "CHANGE" in relation to the campaign of Barack Obama. His hateful, racist agendathat led him to present this to his students is offensive to all who care about decency in our soci- ety. I understand you have taken certain actions against Mr. 'Howard, but feel that nothing short of dismissal is enough to ensure that he doesn't continue to find ways to expose students to his prejudicial and divisive thinking. I .hope that Jackson County's School Board will consider this matter in its meeting on October 16 and will choose to rise above this, by doing the right thing and showing the country that it doesn't condone this kind of behavior and thinking. Regards, Glenda Neel Pender Dahlonega, GA Letter addresses racial issues Note: This letter references a headline on page. 1A of the Oct. 14 edition of the Jackson County Floridan ("Another teacher accused of racial slur"). Dear editor, After reading today's head- line in the Floridan, I find it impossible to remain silent on the issue of racial slurs that have been hurled at the chil- dren of Jackson County. The State Board of Education Rule 6B-1.006, FAC, The Principals of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession in Florida clearly; states that the Obligation to the Student requires that the individual: Shall not intentionally expose a student' to unnecessary embarrassment or disparage- ment. State Board of Education Rule 6-B1.001, FAC, The Code * Of Ethics Of The Education Profession In Florida states Also that The Educators pri- Smary professional concern will always be for the "student and for the development of the stu- dent's potential. The Educator will.therefore always strive for professional growth and will seek to exercise the best pro- fessional judgment and integri- ty. I ask the Teachers and Administrators where is the Professional Judgment or Integrity? Why are, these peo- ple, (Mr. Howard, Mr. Green) or anyone else that uses poor judgment allowed to continue to poison the minds. of the youth of Jackson County? How will we ever put the past (the actions of Jim Crow) behind us when we are constantly reminded of it by our Educators in inappropriate ways. In the days of segregation, things were not equal, but there was certainly respect. Young people respected their teachers and those teachers handled issues or race with more tact and diplomacy than what is displayed today. , The Board needs to set an example which will send a message to every employee in the system that this-type 'of behavior will not be tolerated in the Jackson School District. Sincerely, C.A. Killings Marianna Owner of stolen sign addresses thief Dear Editor: This letter is directed at the person who removed the Obama sign I put up at the cor- ner of Highway 90 East and Indian Springs Road. I placed it there Sunday, Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. You removed it after dark Monday night. This makes you not only a thief but a coward. We have enough signs to put a new one there every day for the next month or until you are caught. One thing is certain You can't steal my vote, can you? Ricky Moore Cypress Retiree vents fear about future Dear Editor: I am not an economist, just a, 76-year-old retiree, my wife trying to live out our savings. It looked pretty good for us until recently, in fact before the Democrats took over Congress in 2006. Now with the finan- cial collapse, we may even have to go to work, probably as a Wal-Mart greeter because of no recent work experience, unless something is done to turn the crisis around. Of course I do not know what the solution is, but I do know that the- people in Congress are the last ones that need to get involved. Congress is exactly the cause of this cri- sis as Henry Paulson (Treasury. Secretary) said in his testimo- ny to the Senate last week. For years Congress has been press- ing the financial institutions to grant home loans to people that more than likely they would not be able to repay. So now these same Congressmen have voted on a $700 billion bail out plan for these institutions to buy these defaulted loans with federal tax money (actually borrowed money). I I hear Congressman Frank and Senator Dodd demanding that Congress must have over- sight of the bailout of these institutions. I wonder where the. oversight was during the build-up to this crisis and who thinks that it will be any better in the future. Maybe it was because.Senator Dodd is the largest receiver of campaign 'contributions from Freddie and Fannie. By the way; Senator Obama's donations is the next largest from these institutions. This election year we should replace all Congressmen who supported this $700 billion bailout, this includes my Congressman Allan Boyd of the 2nd District. Glen E Leirer Panama City Beach Letter bashes bail- out decision Dear Editor: Allen Boyd sided with President Bush this week when he voted for bailing out Bush's Wall Street cronies. Our gov- ernment officials are telling us that anyone who stands in the way of bailouts is ill-informed and that their inaction will drive us to economic ruin. I see things differently, and fortu- nately so does Mark Mulligan, who is running against Allen Boyd in this upcoming elec- .tion. I believe there is a conspiracy of greedy bankers and politi- cians whose self-interest is camouflaged as sophisticated policy. They want us to believe that they have the keys to our salvation. I have seen no evi- dence to confirm this, and I do not trust them. I have read the words of a man who I do trust though, Thomas Jefferson, "If the American people ever' allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks...will deprive the people of all property until their chil- dren wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers con- quered... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." SI suggest We the People start electing representatives who care more about us than they do a select and very wealthy few. I am throwing party registration to the wayside this election year,.and voting against the sta- tus quo. Please join me and send a message to Washington, that we mater more than.these gangsters masquerading as banksters Vote Mark Mulligan for Congress, 2nd district of Florida. In Liberty, Zak Carter Tallahassee Writer thinks gun rights at risk in presidential race Dear Editor: The Supreme Court is at a delicate balance between pro- and anti-gun judges. This year's narrow ruling concern- ing Washington DC case is an example. Anti-gun legislation was narrowly overturned. The Congress is a majority Democratic. If we elect a Democratic US president, I am convinced we will see our Second Amendment Right to bear arms severely restricted or even eliminated (read up on George Soros and his United Nations anti-gun plans). To keep even a balance in favor of those of us who hunt, shoot, and protect ourselves, we need to consider carefully that voting for Obama means a vote against our Second Amendment Rights! Obama and Biden have a history of anti-gun legislation. They won't get my vote. Sincerely, Sharon Joyce DeFuniak Springs. pI LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Submit letters by either mailing to Editor PO.
