OBITUARIES chase, although the deal has not yet formally closed. Currently owned by International Paper Company, the property includes 1.5 miles of river frontage, a large tract of flood plain, and the small, northernmost spring that is part of the Baltzell Spring Group. The property lies roughly a mile north of Florida Caverns State Park, and a portion of the lands can be seen from Christoff's Ferry off Bump Nose Road. Standing at the boat ramp there and looking across the river to the woods beyond, one can.see a section which lies roughly a third of the way down- stream, from the beginning of the tract. The proposed purchase price is just under $297,000.' A major tributary \ of the Apalachicola River and Bay, the Chipola River basin stretches from ft- -OEM Ce S *O -- - -~ a___ - a ~. a - - S - - .- S a- .a ~ U.. ~ - * - a - * a a -lo o Holmes County in Alabama to the Dead Lakes area in central Gulf County. The proposed purchase will enlarge the district's Upper Chipola River Water Management Area, which cur- rently contains 7,738 acres. The river itself begins where Marshall and Cowarts creeks merge, about nine miles above Marianna. Of the 63 known springs feeding into the Chipola, 59 are in Jackson County, giving the community the distinction of having the most springs of any county in the state. A section of land on Chipola River across from Christoff Ferry Landing is part of a tract being purchased by the state to protect the area's watershed.
