Historical photos: going, going, gone BY BOB REDDY STAFF WRITER Buying things on e-Bay can be tricky, because most people never know where the final bid will end up. Last-second bids can un- dermine efforts to get the prized item. That wasn't exactly the case for representatives of Sarasota County who decid- ed to place online bids for a group of panoramic photos of the area taken in 1927 and 1928. County Commissioner Jon Thaxton, County Admin- Sistrator- Jim 'hLey and- many others got involved in a mini- fundraising campaign Friday to compete to get the photos for the Sarasota County His- tory Center. By Sunday night, it be- came apparent the bidding would exceed anything the county could afford. The winning bid was $7,100 for the 156 photos, and it came from someone with the screen name hibis- cussuites. The photos measure 3 3/4 inches by 12 1/2 inches, and were all taken between 1927 and 1928. The online seller said the photos came out of an estate sale from an antique dealer who had them in storage for 30 years. He reported that 63 of the photos had descriptive information on the back, such as the name of the street or intersection or the name of the building shown. Almost all have the photog- rapher's name, Ed Dalton, in the print. Of the whole lot, only 27 are beach or wilder- ness scenes with no build-' *STRONG TIDE a-'A.M. p-P.M. ings shown. The History |Center al- ready has several Ed Dalton photos in its collection. When the county became involved in the online auc- tion Friday, no one had bid on the photos. There was a minimum bid of $156. The final selling price .averaged about $45 per photo. In a series of e-mails be- tween county officials, it was realized that the "last- minute effort was an affirm- ation .of that commitment and a bond that will better prepare us for next time," Thaxton wrote. Ley has directed Deputy I Alligators have a brain the size of your thumb, so when they attack a human, we say, "S6rry, Charlie," and shoot them. Fair enough. They're stu- pid reptiles that eat poodles and footballs. But what on earth got into a deer in Illinois recently? A normally shy doe there attacked three people, inflict- ing injuries. The ticked-off doe's rampage brought "Cau- tion: Deer Attacks" signs to the area. What triggered this behav- ior? Global warming? Deer flu? Too much violence on TV? Who knows, but when Bambi goes bonkers we bet- ter- find out why.
