New club rooted in diversity, service Southern ROOTS is a new club joining the Bradford 4- H family this year, and it's all about instilling important values into kids and introducing them to 4-H activities. Group leader Jill Fulgham said ROOTS is an acronym for the phrase "Raised On Old Time Standards." "There's a lot of kids that don't really know a lot about 4-H, but they want to get more involved in the community," Fulgham said. Southern ROOTS is a general activities club. Already-theelubh. has a wide variety of kids- . including kids from public, private and home. schools-- with a wide variety of interests like showing animals, archery and shooting, crafts and public speaking. "We're going to have a very versatile club," said Fulgham, who co-founded the group with Kathy Skelly. Fulgham was involved with 4-H for fi',e years with her stepdaughter, and inquiries from people at her church led her to post a signup sheet there. Now they have more than 20 kids who meet at Sampson City Church of God on the second Friday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Some attend church there with their families, but others just live in the community. Fulgham said with just two meetings under their belt, they are learning as they go, but they have already elected officers, learned to make ice cream and begun get kids prepared to raise show animals. Coming up will be a visit from an experienced 4-H'er from the county council who will explain some of the finer points of conducting a business meeting. There will also be an emphasis on community service. Fulgham said she and Skelly want to let the kids know that, even though they are young, they can make a difference. "There's plenty of people right here in Bradford County who need help," she said. Whether it's help cleaning up a yard or walking a dog, there are little things kids enjoy doing that can mean a lot to someone's life, she said. There are 14 clubs now operating in Bradford County. A few are specialty clubs, providing activities that are geared toward certain types of activities. For example, Clover Scraps is a club for kids who enjoy scrapbooking. General clubs provide a .variety of activities, including arts and crafts, learning about environmental science, public speaking, learning about plants and animals, and much more. Another new general club is the Sampson City Critters led by Terasa Wood. 4-H was founded in 1902 and is open to all children ages 5-18, regardless of race, color, age, sex, handicap or national origin.
