Table 5.11. Estimated FOB revenue changes resulting from a methyl bromide ban on fresh Florida oranges, tangelos, and tangerines. Annual Change in Crop FOB revenue Oranges -1,330,528 Tangelos -384,512 Tangerines -946,055 Total Impact Summing the FOB revenue changes projected for grapefruit under a methyl bromide ban with those projected for oranges, tangelos, and tangerines gives a total projected FOB revenue loss of $13,385,892. In the 1991-92 production year, the FOB value of all fresh citrus produced in Florida was $583.3 million (Florida Citrus Mutual, 1993). Thus, the loss of methyl bromide and the end of post harvest fumigation of citrus would reduce the FOB value of fresh citrus in Florida by 2.3 percent. One way Florida fresh citrus producers could adapt to a ban on methyl bromide as a post harvest fumigant is to enter into the certified fruit fly free program. In this program, growers pay a fee to a public agency, who places insect traps throughout a citrus grove. If no fruit flies are trapped, the fruit from the grove is certified as being free of possible fruit fly infestation. Our information is that many Florida citrus growers currently participate in this program.
