Owing to their weak structure, creased fruits are quite likely Fig. 73.-Creasing on Pineapple orange. to be attacked by the blue and green mold fungi in transit and are culled out in grading. The cause of creasing is not understood but it has been ob- served that the trouble occurs most frequently on very mature fruit. However, it occurs at times on fruit that has not attained the point of overmaturity. This trouble appears to occur most commonly on the thin-skinned fruit produced in the low ham- mock groves. In view of our present lack of knowledge of the exact cause of creasing, no control measures can be suggested other than to pick the fruit earlier in those groves where the trouble is likely to occur. LUMPY RIND Lumpy rind is a characteristic abnormal condition of the rind that occurs occasionally on grapefruit, and rarely on oranges.
