‘¢ When the eldest virl was about seven-
teen years of age, her father came home one
| night in an unusually violent temper, and

turned the whole family out of doors, threat-
ening to kill the first one who attempted to
come back. It was a cold, stormy night, in
mid-winter, and if a neighbor had not taken
compassion upon them they must have
perished.

At this the neighbors interfered, and
one, a stout, sensible .man, who lived ia the
same house, said that the drunkard must be
arrested. His wife sorrowfully consented,
for she had been much alarmed by his late
outbreak. So the unhappy man was put
