508 God;” Romans ii. 113; “but in every nation he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is ac- cepted with Him.” Acts x. 35.’ All this came into the mind of Peter; and he told Cornelius the lesson God had taught him in the vision; and then he said, “ There- fore I came to you as soon as I was sent for; and now I ask, why is it that ye have sent for me?” Then Cornelius answered, “Four days ago, I was praying in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, and said, ‘ Cor- nelius, thy prayer is heard. And now send to Joppa, and bring here Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea-side. He shall come and speak to thee’ So I sent directly for thee, and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now, therefore, we are all here present before God, to hear the things that - are commanded thee of God.” | Then Peter opened his mouth, and preached to all the people in the house of Cornelius. He told them many things which they had not clearly understood before. He told them of Jesus of Nazareth, and how CORNELIUS. God anointed him with the Holy Ghost, and with power; who went about doing good; whom they slew, and hanged on a tree; and whom God raised up the third day. And then Peter said, “ We are witnesses of these things; and he commanded us to go and preach to the people, and to say, that, through him, all who believe shall receive remission of sins.” While Peter was speaking, the Holy Ghost came upon all why heard him; and they were enabled to speak with tongues, and glorify God. Then Peter commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. And after this, he stayed with them many days. There is much for us to learn from this story. It teaches us the blessing of seeking God, in truth and sincerity, as Cornelius did. It tells us that those who ask shall have, and that those who seek shall find. And it shows us how willing God is to save all who come to Hin, through Jesus Christ, of whatever country they may be. We should be as willing to hear the gospel as Cornelius and his friends were; and let us pray God to bless it to our hearts, as He did to theirs.
