R: So when that passed, then that gave Jon a big plus in the appropriation. The people were going to tax themselves to support this. P: Is this a million dollar amount that he got? R: Actually, it was $9,000,000; $8,000,000 to build and $1,000,000 for planning and fees, etc. The University is on board now and it is all working out. P: The University gave the land? R: Yes. They were going to bring the utilities up to where they had to be and worry about the roads and all of that. The University got involved, the DOT [Department of Transport] got involved, everybody got involved. It was one of those amazing things. P: It was community support. R: It was community support all the way. P: Does Santa Fe have any special rights or privileges there? R: I understand from Larry [Tyree] that we can use it on special occasions, for graduation, and once or twice a year for some special performance. P: I did not know whether that was written into the agreement or not. R: I think there is some understanding about that. I think Larry, for example, has a president's box just like John [Lombardi] has a president's box. P: Lombardi has a box? R: I think there are a few special considerations. P: Actually, do you know, the Lombardis bought tickets and they sit in the audience. They do not sit up in a box. They sit right down with all the common people. You may not recall this, but one night we were having dinner together at the Emmers [Philip and Barbara Emmer], and it was before the bed tax passed, but you threw out that idea. Obviously you had already formulated it, and you said, "What do you think about this?" I remember at that dinner were the [Robert] Bryans, and we were there, the Emmers were there, and maybe the Crisers were there, and everybody thought it was wonderful. You do not recall that, do you? R: As a matter of fact, I do. I remember our having dinner. I know you and the Bryans were there, [but] I cannot remember who else. -135 -
