P: Would you get a person like [Bob] Rowe on the committee today? R: Yes, I think so. But, you see, we lost all those people when [Bob] Martinez [Governor of Florida, 1987-1991] came along. When Martinez lost, the people he had appointed almost invariably were not reappointed, no matter how good they were. I am sure if the Republicans win the next go around, [they will do the same]. P: The same thing will happen. R: The people that [Lawton] Chiles [Governor of Florida, 1991] appointed, will not get reappointed no matter how good they are. P: Do you think it weakens the board not to have a professional educator on the board? R: Oh, I think it is good not to have a professional educator on the board. P: You think it is best not to? R: Yes. Absolutely. P: You do not think a faculty person who has had experience in the classroom would be a good person for the board? R: Just like I do not think if you have a board that is going to supervise the bank, you ought to have bankers on it, just as I do not think college of education professionals ought to be on the school board. I really do not. I think what you need are really, good, solid, right citizens who have a genuine interest. P: Would you prefer businessmen? R: Professional men, businessmen. One of the finest board members we ever had was [Elizabeth] Liz Jones. You know Liz. P: Yes. R: Liz is a social worker, but practical, sensible, solid. Liz was a marvelous board members. P: Has Santa Fe been endowed over the years with good board people? R: Yes. Oh, gosh, yes. P: No lemons? R: One or two, but they never had any influence on the board. 118 -
