R: That was another thing of which Santa Fe was very proud and for which we were well known. I think more of them do it now, but when we began our effort to get some private support, there were not a handful of community colleges in the country that were doing that. The few that were doing it, did not have much. I believe now that the Santa Fe Endowment Corporation has assets of around $7,000,000, which by community college standards is phenomenal. P: These are gifts from people like M. M. Parrish and people like that? R: Yes. And Guy Andrews, and all sorts of people. And Sam, the thing that I always said to people in community colleges when I made a speech somewhere in the old days [and they would say], "Well, we do not have any source of money," I said, "Look, we live in a town with the state's premier university. We live in a place where that University never stops fundraising, and if we can do it, you can do it. But it takes time and effort and energy, and it takes commitment from the president. Now, if the president cannot be bothered, it is never going to work." P: Is Harvey Sharron your endowment person? R: Yes, he is. P: I wondered what his position was there. He is obviously doing a good job if you have $7,000,000. Does Santa Fe put out a newspaper? R: No. We did once. Unfortunately, it was in the days when the student unrest was at its peak. What we found out, frankly, Sam, was that the kids who were running our paper were all headed for journalism, and they were totally dominated and managed by the kids putting out the University paper, before Steve [O'Connell, University of Florida president 1968-1974] finally threw it off campus. P: The Alligator. R: Yes. It [the situation with the paper] was so bad, that what we did was when one year ended, we just never started up again. P: And they have not tried to put an independent newspaper out. R: No. P: So the question of censorship, then, is not one that affects Santa Fe at all. R: There is another advantage of being in the same town with the University, truthfully. P: You can get The Alligator. 112-
