tours. Part of the job of the young people that are there is to guide people through. But it was open, Sam, all the time. One afternoon we had a damn-fool parent come through with his little girl, and stop at the monkey cage. These are good-sized monkeys. We have a big sign, "Do not feed the monkeys. Please do not get near the cage," and then there is this fence. An up-to-here kind of fence. So this guy picked his little girl up and held her over the fence so she can give the monkey a peanut. Well, the monkey cannot tell between her finger and the peanut, and nipped the end of her finger. Well, of course, they get first aid, and about two weeks later--you can guess what happened--we were sued. Well, I was angry as hell and said, "Drop dead," but our attorney told us we had what is called an "attractive nuisance." And I am not sure of this legal definition. And therefore, he said, "I do not blame you one bit, but we need to settle." I said, "Settle? That son of a gun!" Well, in any event, we did it, we paid them $8,000. Then the insurance company said, "We are going to cancel your insurance." So we compromised. We kept the insurance, but we said, "From now on, it will only be open for guided tours at certain times." Well, my God, I got phone calls from all these irate grandmothers and grandfathers who were used to coming out there. I said, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is what happened," [and] I almost gave them the name of guy that sued me, to tell the truth. I explained to them what had happened. Now, we have open houses on a regular schedule which we announce in the newspaper and over the radio. It is still a very popular attraction. P: I hope Rebecca comes here on one of the regular days. R: You call Larry [Tyree], he will arrange for a personal tour for you and your grandchild. P: I have two of them; I will bring both. R: It really is a wonderful thing. P: What about the art gallery? R: Well, being in the same town with the University of Florida was really a very fortunate thing. A lot of people thought that somehow it would be awful, and you are always going to be the little guy on the block, but as I said over and over again, we can do things we could not have possibly thought of doing, being in the same town with the University. We attract a better faculty, we attract students, we attract all kinds of things. 102 -
