medical school which is always a problem with them and we don't
have a medical school, but it's about the same size as our
university." He said, "Is it any better than this one?" I said,
"Well, I wouldn't think so." He said, "Well, I think I'll
just write those people out there I'm not interested in their
job." Well, I was stunned. I didn't say anything.
I wrote to my friend, Ben Cherrington out there, and asked about
it. He replied that Bob Stearns is to be president and
the announcement will be forthcoming in a few months that he's
to replace Norlin. The next month or two, Time magazine came
out with a story about how they selected university presidents
in Colorado. They said Bob Sterns has been groomed to become
president for two years, and that was within two or three
weeks after Tigert had told me he was goint go write them and
tell them he didn't want the job. I knew the job had been
filled. I don't know that Tigert knew the job had been filled.
It was a well-known fact throughout the country that Norlin was
retiring, and Dr. Tigert might have been in communication with
him, but it puzzled me. And then a whole number of things came
up, and the big thing that just completely destroyed my desire
to be at the university was that infirmary investigation. I'd
known about these other things--I knew about the cover-up on the
football team, and I knew that the county director lost his
job, and the state director lost his job because of the team
being on the WPA payroll.
P: This happened at the end of the 1930's; 1938.
L: Yes, I knew all about that, and the cover-up on that.
P: What do you mean by "the cover-up"?
L: Well, the cover-up on the campus. The campus never learned
anything about it. Joe Weil told me, and Joe was a friend
of mine back in those days, and I always was on a friendly
basis with Joe. But Joe told me that he had to take the
rap for that. And I presume he did. The campus didn't know
about it. But it was a nice cover-up because the congressional
report stated that the dean of the university was responsible.
And about the same time, they made Harley Chandler dean of the
university. Never did identify the dean of the university.
