haps to outnumber those on the Eastern Con-
tinent. In the southern parts of Siberia, in the
great Mongolian deserts, and in some parts of
Russia, large herds are sometimes to be found,
but in all these places their parentage can with
more or less distinctness be traced to the do-
mestic race. At the Cape of Good Hope too
they are found in large troops, but there they
are said to be of a small size, and very vicious
and untameable.”’

From their superiority to those of other coun- |
tries, it was long thought to be their native soil,
whence they had spread over the world; but
this has been disputed. Whether it is so or
not, it is certain that they are found more hand-
some, graceful, generous, and persevering there
than elsewhere.”
