Descriptive title of project (code) 9. Description of project (do not exceed space provided) As part of the National Preservation Proram for Aaricultural Literature. Comell University, on behalf of USAIN, and in cooperation with eight other land grant university libraries, seeks support to preserve publications on the history of state and local agriculture and rural life in nine states. The proposed project will result in the systematic identification of the universe of relevant literature in each participating state, not just the titles held in the participating libraries. In each state a panel of scholars and librarians will then rank the resulting lists in terms of the importance of individual titles for research in social, cultural, and economic history. Each state will microfilm the brittle titles judged by the panel to be most important for humanities research. Funding is requested to preserve approximately 25% of the universe in each state, focusing on those titles ranked as highest priority for preservation. This 25%, in combination with the 10 20% of the relevant literature typically already filmed in most states, will result in preservation of approximately 35-45% of the relevant published historical record in each state. Approximately 9,185 titles in 16,628 volumes published between 1820 and 1945 will be preserved. The plan for project administration is based on established models used by RLG and CIC; this project will adapt and extend these models for cooperative preservation to coordinate a discipline-based approach to preservation. 10. Will this proposal be submitted to another government agency or private entity for funding? (if yes, Indicate where and when): No 11. Institutional data a.
