Enclosed please find a proposal submitted on behalf of The Regents of the University of California,
Berkeley. This is a request for Phase I funding from NEH under current NEH Award No. PA-22859-
96. As our Principal Investigator, Peter Lyman, has indicated to me, I enclose a one-page description of
the work and the budget.

This proposal has been prepared using an indirect cost rate other than our DHHS negotiated rate. Use of
this rate requires approval of the Office of the President. A request for approval is being processed and
we will notify you as soon as possible if any changes to this proposal are necessary.
