A traveler cleared out one of these -
wells, some years since. He found it
sixty feet deep, and in the chamber at
the bottom of it, there was a highly-
finished sarcophagus.

The pyramids are very ancient. Some
of them are supposed to have been built
at least two thousand years before
the birth of Christ. There are hiero-
glyphics, or curious letters, on the pyr-
amid of Cheops, which signify Seamphis,
who is supposed to have been the mas-
ter-builder; and he lived almost four
thousand years ago.
