the white walls of their dwellings peep-
ing out from amid the green shade.

Italian Customs.

HE carriages of the cardinals and
of the pope are as large as the
omnibuses of America; they are
lined inside and painted outside

scarlet. The trappings of the horses,
the liveries of the coachmen and foot-

men, the uniform of the papal guard, |

and the garniture of the papal throne
and footstool, are of the same flaming
color. A cardinal has three footmen—
one to help him out of the carriage, an-
other to support his searlet robe, and
inother to carry his parasol.

The Italian people are fond of em-
ploying, on almost.all occasions, figures
for emblems. For example, the litter
that conveys the sick to the hospital
has the image of a bird upon the top,
with a palm branch in its mouth, and
the porter at the hospital door, on a
Sabbath day, stands with a large metal
plate with a human skull upon it paint-
ed-black, to signify “collections received
for the dead.” Ata funeral of a child
the body is conveyed to the church
in a box covered with a rosy pall,
with a wreath upon it, and is borne
thither by four boys dressed as angels,
each of the boys wearing a pair of wings
made of boards, fastened to his back,
and painted very angelically. The
crowns of their heads are liberally pow-
dered with rye flour to represent the

With its branches spreading high ;
“ Water! Water!” rustled he,
For his leaves were very dry ;
Water! water! for the tree!

“ Water! Water!” said the flower,
Whispering with its perfumed breath;
“ Let me have it in an hour,
Ere I thirsting droop in death !
Water, water, soft and still,
Is my will !”

“ Water |! Water!” said the grain,
With its yellow head on high; .
And the spreading, fertile plain,
Ripening, joined the swelling cry ;
Water for the grains of gold |
Wealth untold !

Water! water! sparkling, pure,
Giveth Nature everywhere—
Tf you drink it, I am sure
It will never prove a snare!
Water is the thing for me—
Yes! and thee!

Water! Water! Young and old!
Drink it! crystal-like and sweet !

Never heed the tempter bold—
