saw Tom hastening to meet him. Tom soon
joined him, and together they ran to the spot
where the boat had been left tied to the
stake.

There was no boat there.

“The rogues! the rogues, who set fire
to the log-house, have stolen the boat!” ex-
claimed Howard.

 

“Don’t use profane language,” said Tom.

“T can’t help it; ——- —— them.”

“Please, Framingham, keep your temper.
It will do no good to rave.”

Howard.—Y ou are provokingly cool.

Tom—Am I? I don’t mean to provoke
you. I was thinking how much better boat I
could build now.

Howard.—And I will build the house. I
can buy the materials with my pocket money.
We will have a boat and house worth looking
at—hey, Tom ?

Tom.—tThat we will. I am going to swim
over to the island, and see what is left there.

Howard—I will go with you.

The boys threw off their clothes, and dashing
into the water, swam safely ‘over the river.
