THE GREAT HORNED OWL. 17 be seen dozing on the branch of a tree. They prey upon small birds and mice, stealing upon them in the night. They have a boding cry. The Great Horned, or Cat Owl, is found in every part of the United States. The female is about two feet in length—the male smaller. Their plumage is mottled. The face has much of the appearance of that of the cat. This owl utters a very dismal cry, somewhat resembling the sound of the words, hoo- hoo, or boo-hoo! It makes other very disagreeable noises.
