THE GOOSANDER. 109 as Pennsylvania in summer. The Goosan- der sometimes has a length of thirty-one inches. The female is smaller than the male. The head and upper part of the neck are of a greenish-black color— the top of the back a deep black, and the under portions pure white. The bill and tegs are of a bright red hue, and add - much to the beauty of the bird. The colors of the female are duller, and she ig not near as attractive in appearance. The young scarcely differ from the mother in their plumage.
