THE BLACK-BELLIED DARTER. 8) Darter grows to the length of two feet ten inches. The head, neck, and whole hedy above and below are of a deep, shining black, with a greenish reflection. The Darter usually builds in low trees stretching over the water, and sometimes selects shady islands. When approached, they glide into the stream as noiselessly as an eel. They watch for fish and dart upon them with unerring aim. The smaller ones they swallow at a gulp—the others they break to pieces.
