THE RED PHALAROPRE. Tue Phalaropes are small but beautiful birds. They glide over the water swiftly and easily, and are able to withstand the heaviest waves, like stormy petrels. They are too light and buoyant to dive. They can walk and run quickly, but are seldom seen on the ground. Their flight is easy and elegant. The nests of the Phalaropes are among the grass or reeds. The young birds run about and swim as soon as they are hatched. The Phalaropes inhabit the Arctic seas, whence they migrate, at the approach of winter, into the warmer re- gions.
