THE GOLDEN PLOVER.

Wao lives near the coast of the middle
and northern states and does not know
the call of the Golden Plover? This beau-
tiful bird is the favorite of the sportsmen
as well as of those who love to see and
hear the sprightly visitors of the meadow
and the river-shores. The Plovers live
chiefly upon land-insects, or the worms
they meet with in the salt marshes, and
appear very fond of grasshoppers. It is
a fine sight to see them about the time of
their departure for the south. Early in
the morning they assemble in great flocks,
and as the sun rises, they fly high in the
