THE MARBLED GODWIT. Tue Marbled Godwits are large birds, with long bills and legs, dwelling chiefly in marshes, and frequenting the muddy banks of rivers not far from the sea. They are called marbled on account of their barred and spotted backs. Their sight is weak, and they generally move about at night, or at twilight. They thrust their bills into mud or wet sand in search of food. Being shy and timid, they live in flocks hiding by day among the grass and reeds.
