THE PELICAN. Tue Pelican is the largest of web-footed water-fowls. It is found in nearly all cli- mates, but the flocks are most numerous in the warm regions of the world. Along the shores of the rivers of Africa, a vast number of these birds may be seen. They fly low and heavily, sometimes abreast, and at others in an oblique line. They are often seen to pass close over a building or within a few yards of a party of men, without showing any signs of fear. For the purpose of surprising their prey, the Pelicans haunt eddies near falls, and de- vour great quantities of crabs and other (18)
