GREAT NIGHT HERON OF AMERICA. Tue Night Heron is one of the largest of the water-birds. It sometimes grows to be two feet in length. Its legs are long, and its bill is sharp. The back is of a dusky green color, and the rest of the bird is white, giving the heron a strange appearance. The heron is found in nearly every part of the United States, where there are groves of swamp oaks or gloomy marshes, near ponds or streams. It builds its nest in the highest trees, and will not forsake the place unless it is constantly disturbed. There are heronries in some swamps in the southern states hundreds of years old.
